It is often said that one thing turns into another; this couldn’t be truer with our experiences with the Ural Motorcycle and Pingauers. Now I can just see expressions as to how on earth can there be a connection to these two completely different vehicles!
Well simply put we had a phone call a couple of years ago, from Irbit Motor Works asking us to consider being a Denver Metro dealer for the motorcycle. I raised the same question! It would appear that Pinzgauers are attracted to the same type of owner,; basically someone who is looking for a rugged machine that is easy to fix has excellent off road capabilities. After looking at the bike for a few days we concluded that the improved build quality was much removed from the old questionable 1970’s era bottle cap wheel machines I was accustomed to seeing in the UK in my youth. In those days we called ‘em “Urinals”!
Not any more though, these bikes are made for the USA; in fact North America is the biggest export destination of these flat twins!
The bike has American wiring, battery, Italian switch gear, and Japanese carburetion. Even the castings were smooth and well finished. I liked the bike from the start and the sidecar driven wheel got me reacquainted to the excellent side car off roading manners on the dirt opposite my shop!
Really if you have “motor vehicle” in your blood you cannot be dismissive of innovation and the raw mechanical attractiveness that a motorcycle has when running. After 20 odd years of not riding a bike I was hooked.
Since motorcycles are not our salient business activity we decided to test the waters by becoming an authorized repair centre and gradually build up our parts holding capabilities to ensure fast repair turn around for our regular clients who are entrusting us with their treasured rides.
Recently we have increased our investment in the motorcycle and hope to have a showroom for new and used machines by late 2009.
With fuel prices bound to rise in the long term it might be a good time to consider a new form of transport or fun Sunday outing fun machine to explore Colorful Colorado with your significant other. Can you see yourself as the couple in the thumb nail?
If so is your answer just pick up the phone and call. If you have a bike needing attention or you need parts again just call or drop me an email. You might be glad you did!
See yah on the trail.
Dennis
